Functional Neurological Disorder
Functional Neurological Disorder : That Deserves More Recognition

Imagine experiencing sudden tremors, paralysis, or speech difficulties—only to be told there’s nothing physically wrong with you. This is the reality for individuals living with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a complex condition that disrupts how the brain sends and receives signals to the body. Unlike other neurological disorders, FND doesn’t show structural damage on scans, making it one of the most misunderstood and underdiagnosed conditions.
Why We Need to Talk About FND (And Keep Talking!)
Despite its life-altering impact, FND remains widely unrecognized in both the medical field and the community. Many doctors lack the knowledge to diagnose or treat it effectively, leaving individuals feeling dismissed, isolated, and unsupported. This lack of awareness means many people with FND struggle alone, without the right treatment or resources.
This is why March 25th, FND Awareness Day, is so important. It’s a day to amplify voices, spread education, and advocate for better support and care
Symptoms, Struggles, and Strength
FND symptoms can mimic serious neurological conditions, making diagnosis challenging. They vary widely but often include:
Muscle weakness or paralysis
Non-epileptic seizures
Tremors and involuntary movements
Speech and swallowing difficulties
Chronic pain and fatigue
Cognitive issues, such as brain fog and memory loss
Because these symptoms don’t have an obvious physical cause, people with FND often face skepticism and misdiagnosis, leading to emotional distress and difficulty accessing proper care.
The Hidden Condition No One Talks About
One of the biggest barriers for individuals with FND is the lack of knowledge among healthcare professionals. Many are unfamiliar with the condition, leading to:
Misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis
Limited access to specialized treatment
Psychological distress due to disbelief and stigma
Without proper recognition and care, people with FND can experience severe mental health struggles, increased disability, and reduced quality of life. This is why raising awareness and providing informed care is crucial.
