NDIS News: NDIS funding periods are changing in 2025

So, What’s a Funding Period in the NDIS World?
Simply put, funding periods are the chunks of time during which your NDIS plan funds become available for use. Traditionally, most participants received all their approved funding at the start of their 12-month plan and had to stretch it across the year.
But with new rules, these funding amounts will be divided into smaller, more manageable periods—usually every three months.
What’s Behind the NDIS Changes?
Many participants have shared that managing a whole year’s funding at once can be tricky. Sometimes it leads to:
1) Overspending too early
2) Running out of funds before the plan ends,
3) Just the stress of trying to budget for 12 months in advance.
To help ease these challenges, the NDIS is gradually introducing shorter funding periods. This means funds will be available regularly, helping participants better control their spending and maintain steady access to supports throughout their plan.
What’s New With Your NDIS Budget?
Starting from 19 May 2025, new and reassessed NDIS plans will feature these updated funding periods. Most will be broken into three-month intervals, though the exact period length is tailored to individual needs.
Remember, these changes do not reduce your total funding amount—they simply change when you get access to your funds.
The NDIA decides the schedule by considering:
Your personal preferences,
Any risk of overspending,
And potential risks like financial harm or fraud.
