Taxi Vouchers vs Cabcharge: What’s the difference?

Getting to appointments, visiting family, or running errands shouldn’t feel difficult. For many older adults and people living with disability, reliable transport helps them maintain independence and stay connected with their community.
In aged care and disability support, two transport options often come up: Taxi Vouchers and Cabcharge. While they may sound similar at first, they come from different funding systems and work in very different ways.
When you understand how each option works, you can choose the one that best supports your needs.
Missing Appointments Because Transport Is Hard to Arrange?
Transport does more than move people from one place to another. It helps people stay independent, attend medical appointments, pick up medications, go shopping, and stay connected with family and friends.
Without reliable transport, everyday tasks can quickly become stressful.
That’s why many aged care and disability support programs include transport assistance. Two common options are Cabcharge cards and Taxi Voucher schemes.
Although both help cover taxi travel, they work in very different ways.
Cabcharge: Transport Paid Through Your Care Package
Many aged care programs fund Cabcharge cards or provider-issued transport cards through support packages such as a Home Care Package or similar funding.
Under this system, the taxi fare is paid directly from the individual’s care budget.
Here’s how the process usually works:
Your care provider sets a weekly or monthly transport budget.
The provider loads the allocated amount onto a Cabcharge card.
You use the card to pay for taxi trips directly, just like a debit card.
Because the payment comes from your care package, the system usually covers the full taxi fare, as long as it stays within the approved budget.
As a result, many people use Cabcharge for regular activities such as:
Medical appointments
Pharmacy visits
Grocery shopping
Social outings
Visiting friends or family
Since the provider manages the budget and payments, the process stays simple. You don’t need to carry cash or submit reimbursement claims.
Taxi Vouchers: A Government Subsidy Program
Taxi vouchers operate under a completely different system.
In New South Wales, the program is called the Taxi Transport Subsidy Scheme (TTSS). Unlike Cabcharge, the state government runs this program, and it is not connected to aged care funding.
The scheme supports individuals who cannot use public transport due to a severe and permanent disability.
However, age alone does not make someone eligible for the program.
To apply, individuals must:
Submit an application through the relevant government authority
Provide medical information from a GP
Meet the scheme’s eligibility criteria
The application process can take time and may require detailed documentation.
If the application is approved, the program typically covers up to 50% of the taxi fare, up to a capped amount. The passenger pays the remaining portion of the fare at the time of travel.
The Key Differences Between Taxi Vouchers and Cabcharge
Although both options support taxi travel, the source of funding and level of coverage are very different.
| Feature | Cabcharge | Taxi Vouchers |
|---|---|---|
| Funding Source | Aged care package (Home Care Package or similar funding) | State government disability program |
| Cost Coverage | Usually covers the full fare within the transport budget | Usually covers around 50% of the fare |
| Who Manages It | Managed through your care provider | Managed through the government scheme |
| Application Process | Organised through your provider | Requires a separate government application |
| Payment Method | Card used like a debit card | Voucher or subsidy applied to fare |
Because these programs come from different funding systems, they are generally used separately. In most cases, both cannot be used for the same taxi trip.
Which Option Is Right for You?
The best option depends on your personal circumstances and eligibility.
Some people who qualify for taxi vouchers keep them as a backup, while using Cabcharge for regular transport through their care package.
Others choose to rely solely on Cabcharge because it covers the full fare and offers a simpler payment process.
Since every situation is different, it helps to speak with your care provider. They can explain your available options and help include the right transport support in your care plan.
