What You Need to Know About NDIS Provider Travel Changes (2025-26)

From 1 July 2025, the way NDIS providers claim travel especially for therapy supports is changing. Whether you’re a participant or provider, staying on top of the new rules ensures smooth service delivery and compliant invoicing.
At Abled Care and Nursing Services, we’re here to help you navigate these changes and make sure your supports continue seamlessly.
What’s Changing in NDIS Provider Travel?
Under the NDIS Pricing Arrangements 2025–26, therapy providers can now only claim 50% of the hourly price limit for travel time.
These changes only affect therapy supports, including early childhood intervention. Travel rules for other services—like support worker travel—remain the same.
💬 So what does that mean in practice? Let’s break it down.
How the New Travel Caps Work
To keep things fair, the NDIA has capped how much time can be claimed for provider travel:
MMM1–3 (Metro areas): Up to 15 minutes
MMM4–5 (Rural/Remote areas): Up to 30 minutes
If the actual time is less than the cap, providers must use the actual time travelled for their claims.
Example:
A physiotherapist (price limit: $183.99/hr) can now claim up to $92/hr for travel.
10 minutes travel in Metro = $92 ÷ 60 x 10 = $15.33
40 minutes in Remote = $92 ÷ 60 x 30 = $46 (capped at 30 minutes)
✅ Note: This doesn’t impact other services like support worker travel.

What About Kilometre Charges?
In addition to labour time, providers can still claim reasonable non-labour travel costs, like:
$0.99 per kilometre (if using provider/worker’s own car)
Full reimbursement for tolls, parking, or public transport
📌 But here’s the catch: These charges must be included in your Service Agreement and claimed separately using the “Provider Travel – non-labour costs” line item.
Travelling Between Participants—What’s Allowed?
Travelling between participants? That’s fine but there are a few key rules:
✅ If participants are in the same MMM region and agree:
You can split travel time proportionally between them
Time must stay within limits:
30 minutes in MMM1–3
60 minutes in MMM4–5
Example:
A provider travels 20 minutes from Participant A to B in a metro area (MMM2).
Both participants agree to share the cost.
Each is charged for 10 minutes.
❌ If not all participants agree:
Travel must be charged individually based on actual time to each participant
Returning to the Office:
Time can be shared among all consenting participants, or
Fully charged to the last participant on the route
Provider Travel vs Activity-Based Transport
Let’s clear up a common confusion:
Provider Travel = When a support worker travels to or from a participant for a face-to-face session
Activity-Based Transport = When the provider travels with the participant as part of a support (like going to the shops or community events)
These two are claimed differently under NDIS, and it’s crucial not to mix them up.
